If you are preparing to decorate a new home or are simply wanting to change an outdated room, then you’ll be interested in the new, hot home decor trends.  Many times we can take a look at the fashion world and get a feel for popular new fabrics and designs, and incorporate them into our homes.  There are, however, a few trends that are becoming increasingly popular, and I will list them for you below!  Hopefully, one of these ideas will inspire you and perhaps your inner-interior designer too.

Antlers
Yes, antlers.  The most commonly used antlers in home decor are those of a deer (no worries — deer shed their antlers every year, so no harm is done to the animal for the sake of decorating).  Placing items created with antlers can give your home a rustic, earthy, lodge-like feel.  It’s a wonderful accent for the country home, but don’t despair — the right piece can actually be quite contemporary as well.  Keep in mind when choosing the right piece, there are many different ones available including lights, mirrors, chandeliers, and even drawer pulls — so be creative and have fun with it.

A Different Kind of Animal Print
We all remember the boom-chick-a-wow-wow leopard and tiger animal prints — well now, a different kind of animal print is in style.  Woodland animals such as squirrels, deer, and birds have gained a lot of popularity in the past year.  We love the idea of bringing a little bit of nature into your home.  The best way to do this?  Select decor pieces such as pillows, throws, art prints, and accessories for a subtle woodsy feel.

Brown
Brown is now the new black.  We are seeing brown everywhere, not just as an accent color anymore.  It’s a wonderfully neutral color and there are so many different shades to choose from.  Did I mentioned that brown also pairs quite nicely with almost every other color?  Choosing different brown tones with other accent colors can also give your decor a specific look.  Examples: Softer browns and greens create an earthy feel, where darker brown and pink is chic and modern.

The Color is on the Wall
Remember in the 90’s when everything was white, stark white, and then a little more white?  Well times are definitely changing.  Give your walls a little color.  Although we love bright colors that make a bold statement – any color will do.  What’s starting to gain popularity?  Soft, nature inspired colors such as light blues, sage greens, and pale pale yellows.

Green Wall

Gray Tone Metals
Cool, gray tone metals such as silver, pewter, steel, nickel (brushed also), platinum, aluminum, and charcoal are another home decor trend.  Try using several of these metal pieces such as tables, wall art, chairs, cabinets, or larger decorative storage containers to give your home a modern touch.  Not into that much metal?  Why not simply add a few accent accessories like candle holders, lighting, or a fancy fireplace screen.

Flat Screened TVs Over Fireplaces
Nowadays, technology is so advanced and amazing that watching the television is almost literally like watching moving art.  That being said, why not treat your TV as if it truly were art and hang it over your fireplace?  Many people are doing just this — taking their larger, flat screen televisions and mounting them into the walls above a fireplace.  Not only does it leave you with more space, since you no longer need the large TV stand, but it creates a beautiful focal point in the room.  Worried about the television being too high to watch comfortably?  Install it with a tilt mount and problem solved!

Geometric Shapes
This is one trend to be used in a bit more moderation.  Too many geometric shapes in one area can be overwhelming and almost dizzying.  Keep this in mind when selecting home decor accessories.  A great art print, kitchen chairs with a geometric patterned back, an area rug, or even a fabulous upholstered accent chair is plenty.

Gaining popularity in the past few years is the rustic and beautiful Tuscan themed art prints.  Rural Italian art is timeless with their scenic countryside views and their warm, soft, and stunning color scheme.

Tuscan inspired art usually focuses on the gorgeous landscapes of Italy, the endless vineyards, the rustic and worn wooden furniture, olives, grapes, wine, and their beautiful blooming gardens.  The color palette used in Tuscan art is a simple yet striking one, and is accomplished by using shades of ocre, clay, deep red, and contrasting light blues.

Mirrors are wonderful accents for home decor as they add light, reflect images, look beautiful, and can even create the illusion of more space.  Mirrors come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and different frames, so it’s easy and fun to find the perfect piece to accent youOrchid in Mirrorr home.

The first 2 things you need to decide when selecting a mirror, is the placement and the size.  Where would you like your mirror to hang?  Are there any other home furnishings in the surrounding area?  There are so many things to consider with the placement of a mirror.  For example, placing a mirror by a light actually doubles the actual amount of light given off.  Putting one near a glass window (or door), allows the mirror to reflect the beauty of the outdoors.  Hanging a large mirror in a small room, will give the illusion that the room is almost twice the size!

Think about what you would like to reflect with your mirror, whether it be room size, your outdoor garden, a beautiful dining room chandelier, light, photos, even water.  The possibilities are endless!

After choosing your mirror size and placement, you can now decide what type of mirror you would like.  Perhaps you would like an large ornate mirror, or simply a square one with a basic frame.  Choose the type of mirror by using your personal taste of course as well as matching the design to the rest of your room’s decor.

Now that you have all of the mirror decisions covered, it’s time to hang it!  Note: Make sure that if you have chosen a heavy mirror that there are wall studs/beams to fasten it to.  Finally, select the proper hardware, grab a partner, and hang that mirror!

PaintingsHanging a picture is a simple process with only a few quick and easy steps to follow.  Here are step-by-step instructions as well as a link to a how-to video.

Before anything else, decide where you would to hang your picture.  Remember, pay attention to details such as wall size and surrounding furniture when choosing a location.  Make sure that your picture is not too big or too small!

Once you have decided on a spot, place the picture against the wall and make small marks on the bottom 2 corners.  From there, measure up to where the picture brackets are, or where the peak of the picture frame wire is located.  Make marks.  These will be for the picture fasteners.  Note:  If you have a heavier picture, make sure to fasten it to one of the studs for extra support.

Next, find the studs in the wall.  They are usually spaced about 16″ apart.  You can find studs with a stud finder, or by simply tapping on the wall and listening for a different sound.

Once you have found the studs, you can then choose the fasteners you are going to use.  There are fasteners made for both the weight of a picture, as well as where it is going on the wall — whether it be into the stud or the wall board.

Next, nail or screw the proper fastener into the wall where you made your marks and place the picture onto the fasteners.  For the final touch, level and center your picture using a laser leveler — and you’re all done  Now all you have to do is sit back and enjoy your picture!
